Complete objectives to unlock the confined places of this godforsaken workshop and see what lies in them, be aware that the objectives could be dangerous for your life to the point where you may die. Oh don't be scared so much, as your friends can (maybe) help you! If you think that the objectives are too hard for you and you feel like staying in safety, you could miss all the fun (painful death and possible loss of your companions (if they exist)) and simply roam around then, nobody will judge you for that! There must be a plenty of places to find fun activities in, try to find something that could please you. I, however, hope that you'll decide to complete the objectives though.
