In 1876, the Japanese government passed new laws preventing samurai from carrying a sword. This broke the Samurai warrior code, and so many gave up their status. But many lived on, hiding in snowy caves or ancient monasteries. But when the Chinese invade in the 1910s, they have to come out of hiding.
