By the 1970s, while the Republic of Rizal was without a leader after Pangulo Reyes' overthrow, the old city of Rizal was subjected to nuclear and atomic weapon tests by the United States. The last atomic test was conducted in 1978 and Pangulo Castillo forbid the United States from further atomic testing. The island has suffered permanent damage against it's infrastructure and environment. Radiation levels on the island have worn off over the years but still remains fairly radioactive, though not fatal in some areas. The island remains abandoned and quarantined.
