Endurance departed from South Georgia for the Weddell Sea on 5 December, heading for Vahsel Bay. As the ship moved southward, early ice was encountered, which slowed progress. Deep in the Weddell Sea, conditions gradually grew worse until, on 19 January 1915, Endurance became frozen fast in an ice floe. The crew realised they would be stuck there until Spring when the ice melted. Shackleton led all his men safely back home. When they arrived, little attention was paid to them as the world was at war. Most men were conscripted and killed in action.

A depiction of the formality performed at sea to show respect towards another ship. Passing Honours assembles the crew to one side of the ship to give a salute as they pass.
