Possessing and using the Death Note comes with grave consequences. Upon death, humans who use the notebook neither go to Heaven nor Hell but instead wander the Shinigami Realm. Shinigami (death gods) are the original owners of Death Notes, and they sometimes give these notebooks to humans out of boredom or curiosity.
