Empathy is nothing more than a complex series of logical deductions to determine the best outcome on a fundamental and genetic level for the entirety of the species. There is no such thing as giving a present to an individual to "be nice;" you are expecting some form of generosity in return, even if all you want is for the individual to be friendly toward you. After all, why else respond as you do when an individual is rude to you after you gift them something very dear to you?
