Knowledge is the most important thing that you should have. Otherwise, how would you do anything?
Respect is only built by your actions. Being helpful and kind gives you a nice reputation, building awesome things means that you have the skill to do it, scripting spectacular stuff means that you're awesome, and if you do all of these, then indeed, you are/should be respected.
But, on the other side, if you are mean, rude, destroy stuff, and any of these, you're just going to be hated.
